Doheny State Beach Clean Up
June 26, 2017
Surfrider Foundation and South Cove Partner to Clean Doheny State Beach on International Surfing Day
Event First in Series Planned for Dana Point Community
More than 50 volunteers from Dana Point and Orange County joined Surfrider Foundation, South Orange County Chapter, and staff from Zephyr’s South Cove community to pick up over 400 pieces of trash from Doheny State Beach in honor of International Surfing Day on June 17.
Sponsored by South Cove – Dana Point’s new condominium community located directly across the street from Doheny State Beach – the beach cleanup is the first in a series that will be organized through South Cove’s partnership with Surfrider Foundation.
“As California’s first state beach, Doheny has long served as an iconic destination along the coast,” said Zephyr Chief Operating Officer Chris Beucler. “We must preserve this natural resource, and share Surfrider Foundation’s commitment to ensuring future generations will be able to enjoy it.”
Items recovered during the cleanup included various plastics, cigarette butts, Styrofoam and glass bottles – objects that can have serious negative impacts on the surrounding wildlife and ecosystem.
“We’re thankful for the support South Cove is providing to our programs,” said Rick Erkeneff, chairman of Surfrider Foundation, South Orange County Chapter. “Not only are they sponsoring beach cleanups, but they also support the Surfrider SOC High School Club program that teaches students about environmental stewardship and making a positive impact. They really share our values; it’s a great partnership.”
Following the beach cleanup, volunteers were treated to a BBQ, where they had an opportunity to win prizes and learn more about Surfrider Foundation and South Cove.
A cleanup of the San Juan Creek Trail – which connects with Doheny State Beach – is next in the series. Details will be released once the date has been finalized.
